APAS Updates

 1. APAS letter to Minister Marit about creating a provincial Drought Preparedness Committee: On February 27, APAS sent a letter to Minister Marit, encouraging the provincial government to create a provincial Drought Preparedness Committee. According to AAFC’s Drought Monitor Assessment in January, all of Saskatchewan is currently in at least a D0 drought, with many regions of the province reporting more advanced stages of drought, including a large portion of the West Central region being in a D3 drought. You can read our letter to Minister Marit by clicking here.

2. APAS meetings with officials in Ottawa last week: Last week, APAS Directors, staff, and our APAS Young Leaders attended the Canadian Federation of Agriculture’s AGM in Ottawa. In addition to the AGM, we met with Lawrence MacAulay (federal Minister of Agriculture), Stephanie Beck (federal Deputy Minister of Agriculture), Arun Thangaraj (federal Deputy Minister of Transport), Robert Black (Chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee), Kody Blois (Chair of the House of Commons Agriculture Committee), John Barlow (federal Conservative Agriculture Critic), Alistair MacGregor (federal NDP Agriculture Critic), Yves Perron (Bloc Agriculture Critic), Justine Hendricks (CEO of Farm Credit Canada), and Mary Robinson (Senator and CFA Past President), plus we attended Question Period in the House of Commons on February 29. These meetings were important opportunities for APAS to lobby on behalf of Saskatchewan producers, so click on any of the highlighted names to see photos from the meetings.

3. All 9 APAS policy resolutions passed at the CFA AGM: At the Canadian Federation of Agriculture’s AGM last week, all 9 of the policy resolutions that APAS submitted for discussion and voting during the AGM’s policy session were passed without any amendments.
